Gyeon Hwon, a Pioneer of a New Era

Many people are aware of the Three Kingdoms Period (225?265) in China based on the fascinating stories of heroes from the states of Wei, Shu, and Wu using strength and wisdom to vie for dominance in tumultuous times.

A period of such heroism also took place on the Korean Peninsula roughly 1,100 years ago.

The Unified Silla Kingdom had brought together the Three Kingdoms and built a splendid culture, but it began waning like once-full moon. The lives of its people were becoming increasingly difficult.

The commoners longed for a better world and began to seek a change.

Heroes started to emerge across the country, including Gyeon Hwon. A renowned leader of the Later Three Kingdoms period, Gyeon Hwon was born in Gaeun-hyeon, Sangju (present-day Gaeun-eup in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province). He took over the territory that is now Jeollanam-do Province and founded the Later Baekje Kingdom with its capital in Jeonju.

Historical records deride Gyeon Hwon as an also-ran and a father who was betrayed by his son, but is this the whole story?

This exhibition introduces the Unified Silla Kingdom in the days before Gyeon Hwon opened his new era. It retraces the history and culture of his Later Baekje Kingdom by focusing on its traces remaining in Jeollabuk-do Province and Marosanseong Fortress in Gwangyang. It also spotlights the stone Buddha sculptures at Bongrimsaji Temple in Wanju to promote a better understanding of the earnest wishes of the people of the Later Baekje Kingdom and King Gyeon Hwon’s unfulfilled dreams.

A different and less-known story quickly unfolds about Gyeon Hwon and the Later Baekje Kingdom, the country of his dreams.
