Information
Calligraphy is an art form based on writing. Writing was once every bit as much a field of study as it was an everyday act of writing a letter or diary.
It is also a creative endeavor and provided an emotional outlet. This exhibition sheds light on both the everyday nature and artistry of traditional Korean calligraphy.
We invite you to appreciate the grace and charm of calligraphy while tracing the brushstrokes found in the calligraphy of ancient Koreans and imagining the ideas of the calligraphers.
I. Writing about Life
During the Joseon Dynasty, many Koreans kept the so-called “Four Friends of the Study” (paper, brush, ink, and inkstone) close at hand.
For them, making ink by grinding an ink stick on an inkstone and writing with a brush was a natural part of daily life.
Letters sent to family members or friends, Confucian scriptures transcribed as a form of discipline, diaries reflecting on the day, and plaques with building names all faithfully reflect lives of the people who wrote the calligraphy.
II. Writing as Art
Korean calligraphers mastered the writing of noted calligraphers in an effort to learn to write well, but after years of hard work they eventually perfected their own unique calligraphic styles.
Calligraphy is an art form created by following an example from the past but adding something new.
We hope you can enjoy this calligraphy in both Chinese characters and Hangeul (Korean letters) not only for the content, but also for the beauty of the dots and strokes, the dynamics of speed and pressure, and the sense of rhythm.
