Information

Amidst the male-dominated society of the Joseon Dynasty, the political, social, and cultural activities of Korean women were severely repressed.

For example, women were actively restricted from writing and painting, so even the most talented women faced a fierce struggle to realize their literary and artistic aspirations.
Still, a number of extraordinary women braved these harsh social conditions and used their artistic and creative talents to express their innermost feelings and aspirations, often producing literary works that were superior to those of their male counterparts.
In particular, Joseon women excelled in a special type of love poetry, resulting in the beautiful melancholy stories told in this special exhibition.
