Information

This special exhibition celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Choe Buk, pen name "Hosaenggwan," one of the foremost painters of the late Joseon period.
This exhibition, the first to focus solely on Choe Buk,showcases hisrepresentative works and personal records about his life, including some newly discovered works and documents. Details about Choe Buk's life and lineage are quite scarce, since such information was rarely recorded for professional artists during the Joseon Dynasty.
Still, various literati who knew Choe Buk have provided some fascinating anecdotes about his life, making him somewhat of a legendary figure of the time. In this exhibition, Choe Buk is recast as an intellectual artist of the 18th century who excelled at all three of the primary literati art forms: painting, poetry, and calligraphy.
This exhibition also marks the 11th in the museum's ongoing series of exhibitions celebrating the "Cultural Relics of Jeollabuk-do," with this year's focus being on the area of Muju. It was decided that the exhibition should examine a local figure, and Choe Buk, a member of the Muju Choe clan, was chosen for the occasion.
We hope that this event will demonstrate new possibilities for presenting local cultural relics, while helping our visitors better understand local culture and history by exploring the extraordinary artistic world of Choe Buk.
