[Opening the Exhibition]
Jeonju National Museum now presents a special exhibition, " The Return of the Oegyujanggak Uigwe from France: Records of the State Rites of the Joseon Dynasty"
The Uigwe texts of Joseon Royal Household, the comprehensive reports of national and royal events of Joseon, were acknowledged globally with their historic and cultural worth and inscribed into the UNESCO memory of the World Register in 2007.
In particular, Oegyujanggak Uigwe materials have a special importance in that they were made with an extraordinary effort for the king's perusal. Oegyujanggak Uigwe materials had been kept in the National Library of France and were returned to Korea in 2011.
For the first time, Oegyujanggak Uigwe texts come here, Jeonju, the native soil of Joseon Royal Household. We welcome them with pleasure and we want to share the pleasure together with you. Please feel the rigorous record-keeping spirit of our ancestors and the underlying dignity and majesty of Joseon Royal Household through this special exhibition.

[儀軌]
When national or royal important events or projects were proceeding in Joseon Dynasty, the processes were thoroughly recorded and Uigwe[儀軌] texts were compiled on the basis of those records. Among those texts, Eoramyong[御覽用] Uigwe[儀軌] texts were made of special materials and by extraordinary manners for the king's perusal.
Eoramyong Uigwe had been kept in Gyujanggak[奎章閣] after the king's perusal, and were transferred to Oegyujanggak[外奎章閣] in Ganghwa Island since its establishment in 1782. Therefore, Oegyujanggak Uigwe texts have a significant meaning in that most of them were for the king's perusal.

 texts
The Joseon Uigwe texts make good materials for understanding the royal ceremonies of that time in detail.
The major ceremonies recorded in Uigwe texts encompass various rituals to the Royal Ancestral Shrine[Jongmyo] and the Altar to the Gods of the Soil & Grain[Sajik], and the royal events like births, status investitures, weddings and funerals. Such records inform us that the rites of Joseon Royal Household were performed solemnly with magnificence but also with moderate propriety.

 texts
Yeongjo[英祖], the 21st king of Joseon, was a ruler who led the Renaissance of Joseon with his successor, Jeongjo[正祖]. However, he faced a political difficulty, "Dangjaeng[黨爭]," which meant the conflicts of two different political parties, behind such exploits. As an effort to overcome it, Yeongjo promoted a policy to elevate the dignity of the king and the royal household. The Uigwe texts made during Yeongjo's rule, whose numbers are greater than those made during any other king's rule, help us to know the detailed content of the events resulted from that policy.
