Information

Kang Sehwang (1713-1791) lived throughout much of the 18th century, during the Joseon dynasty, when Korean cities burgeoned under successive peaceful reigns and dynamic changes in epistemological views and life patterns occurred. Endowed with a combination of artistic talent, passion, and intellectual inquisitiveness, Kang Sehwang established his own art world encompassing poetry calligraphy, and painting, and was also an influential critic of great discernment with a profound understanding of art. The broad scope of Kang’s activities and his exceptional acumen contributed to the formation of a broad network of diverse groups of people drawn from different ranks and classes, ranging from the king and gentleman scholars without any official position, to court artists of a low social status, all brought together by art. This network promoted friendships among the individuals involved and formed an undercurrent of shared artistic aspirations.
This exhibition explores the dramatic life and oeuvre of Kang. The objects displayed at the exhibition include Kang's masterpieces of landscape, portraiture, and the Four Gracious Plants, as well as selected pieces by other painters whose works bear Kang's inscriptions. We hope that the present exhibition will offer an interesting opportunity for readers and visitors alike to explore diverse aspects of the efflorescent art world of 18th-century Joseon, as represented by Kang Sehwang's art.
