Jeonju
is a historical city, renowned for not only being the hometown of the royal
court of the Joseon Dynasty, but also for being the capital of the Later Baekje
Kingdom (892-936). To highlight the history and culture of Jeonju, the National
Museum of Jeonju is presenting a special exhibition, The Wuyue Kingdom
during the Transitional Period of the Tang and Song Dynasties, from October
27 through December 20, 2015. This exhibition features carefully selected
artworks from the collection of the Suzhou Museum, China to shed light on the
history and culture of the Wuyue Kingdom (907-978), which thrived around the
regions of the Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and maintained close ties with
the Later Baekje Kingdom.
The
National Museum of Jeonju concluded an agreement with the Suzhou Museum in 2009
to foster cultural exchanges between the two museums, and as its first attempt
selected works from the Suzhou Museum are presented in Jeonju for the first
time in Korea. The exhibition spans a period from the Tang to the Wuyue and
Song dynasties, and in particular it focuses on the Buddhist artworks found in Huqiu
Pagoda and Ruiguang Pagoda in Suzhou as well as Yue ware and diverse burial items.
