Information

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the demise of Chae Yong-sin (1850~1941), a leading portrait painter of Korea. He was originally a government official but went on to earn fame and recognition with his royal portraits. Later he created many of his artistic works in Jeolla-do region.
The special exhibition is organized into three sections. In the first section, under the theme of "Painting for a Living," you can see how Chae became famous by painting royal portraits. The second section, under the theme of "Jeolla-do People in Chae's Paintings," introduces other works depicting independence activists and confucian scholars of the Jeollabuk-do region. The third section, titled "Creating Various Paintings," displays diverse genres of paintings other than portraits.
This special exhibition will provide visitors with a precious opportunity to see Chae Yong-sin's paintings, which have long remained undisclosed to the public. Please come and discover Chae's artistic world, and experience the local culture of the Jeollabuk-do region at the same time.
